cathodic protection of concrete and masonry structures

Galvashield CC sacrificial anodes

Galvashield CC sacrificial anodes

Embedded galvanic anodes for corrosion control and protection

•It is well established that the CP process achieves an immediate reduction in the corrosion rate by shifting the steel/concrete potential but that, in addition, the cathodic reactions on the steel/concrete interface increase the alkalinity (raise of pH) by Hydroxyl ions (OH-) generation and drive Chloride ions away from the steel due to the negative charge of the ions being repelled by the negative polarity of the reinforcement and attracted by the positive polarity of the anode.

•Thus cathodic protection of steel in concrete has always incorporated some degree of re-alkalisation and re-distribution of chlorides.
