The Westerstaketsel in Ostend is one of the longest wooden piers in the world (650 meter long, constructed in 1888) and in need of repair to secure the stability. The wooden piles and beams have been repaired with the Aslan, GFRP rebars in combination with epoxymortars. So less new tropic wood needs to be used. And saving our forests.

Water basin repairs itself due to Self-healing Concrete

A water basin of Port of Rotterdam has been constructed with special concrete walls. Due to addition of Basilisk Healing Agent to the concrete the walls will be able to heal itself when cracking occurs. The system is based on bacteria which, when subjected to water contact, will precipitate limestone which will gradually seals the cracks. The technology has been developed at the TU Delft and has been applied in practice due to the corporation of BAM Infra and Basilisk. Available on exclusive base in Belgium through Fortius, Diest

The basin is tank constructed out of four concrete walls. The basin has a length of 47 meters, a width of 5.5 meters and a height of 5 meters. Two walls has been constructed with plain concrete, whereas the other walls has been constructed with the addition of Basilisk Healing Agent.

During the construction there has been no noticeable difference observed in the workability of the Self-healing concrete mixture compared to the plain mixture. Also tests show that there has been no significant difference in the strength development comparing both mixtures (mixtures where identical except the addition of the Self-healing additive).

The Sas Slijkensbrug which connects Bredene with Ostend is being completely renovated. The works are carried out by Renotec on behalf of the  Road and Traffic Agency of the Flemish Government.

The works include performing concrete repairs in the bridge structure and modernizing the railings. The bridge deck gets a new waterproof membrane while the road and footpaths are renewed. Finally, the bottom of the bridge is painted again.

During the repair of the underside, pit corrosion of the reinforcement was diagnosed.

Deteriorating waterproofing and the use of deicing salts make that reinforcement in the bridge deck, joints and land heads corrode. As a result, the concrete is damaged.

This concrete damage is progressive and the damage image consists of either cracking of concrete or rust spots. In case of attack with chloride, the reinforcement show pitcorrosion. Such attack is not unusual in bridges and can affect the stability of the bridges.

During the repair of the bridges, further corrosion of the reinforcement can be stopped by the installation of the Galvashield sacrificial anodes of Fortius, Diest.

For this, the Cl content (> 0.40% on cement content) and the amount of internal steel are determined. This data allows to determine the required amount of sacrificial anodes.

This system provides a durable solution and prevents recurring damage. It thus provides additional protection of the reinforcement steel and extends the service life of the repair and the bridge.
