Deze betonschade is progressief en het schadebeeld bestaat uit ofwel barsten van het beton ofwel roestvlekken. Bij aantasting met chloride vertoont de wapeningen putcorrosie. Dergelijke aantasting is niet ongebruikelijk in bruggen , kan de stabiliteit van de bruggen aantasten en kan een gevaar zijn daar er betonstukken op de wagens kunnen terecht komen.
Bij de reparatie van de bruggen kan verdere corrosie van de wapening gestopt worden door de installatie van de Galvashield opoffer anodes.
Hiervoor wordt het Cl- gehalte (> 0,40 % op cement gehalte) en de hoeveelheid inwendig staal bepaald. Deze gegevens laten toe om de nodige hoeveelheid opofferanodes te bepalen.
Galvashield bestaat uit een kern van zink, omgeven door een speciale mortel. De Galvashield is voorzien van een verbindingsdraad die dan rechtstreeks aan de wapening bevestigd wordt. Zink is een minder edel metaal dan het wapeningsstaal, waardoor het zink wordt aangetast in plaats van de wapening (het offert zich als het ware op).
Dit systeem biedt een duurzame oplossing en voorkomt terugkerende schade. Het biedt aldus een bijkomende bescherming van het wapeningsstaal en verlengt de levensduur van de reparatie en van de bruggen.
